The Why's and What's of Wheatgrass

Forget disease, drink your wheatgrass! Although I am temporarily on a wheatgrass hiatus due to my own immune issues, I cannot wait to resume drinking this sweet, green nectar. Wheatgrass is the most powerful and healing plant-based "medicine" on the planet! It is the richest source of chlorophyl, the blood of plants, and is interestingly almost identical in its molecular structure as the hemoglobin of human blood. The healing properties and benefits of wheatgrass are numerous and drinking 4 oz of wheatgrass daily:
  • Builds red blood cells, carrying oxygen to the cells
  • Oxygenates white blood cells boosting the body's immune function
  • Detoxifies the body's blood, fat cells, and vital organs of residual drugs, pollutants, pesticides, heavy metals, etc.
  • Increases the enzymes levels in the cells leading to healing within the body
  • Restores brain function at optimal levels
  • Has antibacterial, anti viral, and anti fungal properties
  • Normalizes blood sugar issues
  • Reduces cholesterol, blood pressure and triglycerides
  • Relieves constipation and aids digestion
  • Has a deodorant effect on the breath and body
  • Keeps hair from graying drining
  • Improves strength, endurance, health and energy
  • Aids in weight loss and weight maintenance
If these are not enough reasons to entice you to drink wheatgrass daily, consider these uses:
  • As a poultice to aid in healing the skin of cuts, rashes, psoriasis and infection
  • As a hair rinse to detoxify the scalp and for radiantly shiny hair
  • As a skin and pore detox - pour over your body in the tub and soak in it
  • As skincare - use poultice on acne and wrinkles to reduce and eliminate
Because wheatgrass is such a powerful detoxifier, one should start out drinking 1oz, once daily then increase to 1oz, twice daily.  Work up over the course of a few days to 2oz, twice daily.  With wheatgrass, more is not necessarily better.  Hippocrates Health Institute  says that the body will only absorbe 4oz daily so consuming more is unnecessary and wasteful. If you have a strong detox reaction to wheatgrass, slow it down a bit.  Detox symptoms can include nausea, fatigue, constipation, diarrhea,  headaches, aches, pains, lethargy, brain fog, etc. Listen to your body and remember, that this is part of the healing cycle.

Wheatgrass shots and cut wheatgrass can be purchased at health food stores but here can sometimes be issues with freshness and supply. If you are willing to  grow it, the process if fairy simple.  You will also need a masticating juicer such as the Omega 8006 to extract wheatgrass juice.  There are also manual wheatgrass juicers which are excellent for extracting the juice.  Check out my links pages for wheatgrass supplies, including organic seeds, growing trays, etc.

Happy Juicing!
